What happens to a doctrine when it outlives its originator? Waḥdat al-wujūd -- the Oneness of Being -- was never simply Ibn ʿArabī's theory. This volume, the first of its kind in English, tracks the doctrine across seven centuries of elaboration, contest, and reinvention: from Jāmī's theological translation of Akbarian metaphysics to Āmulī's esoteric Qurʾanic hermeneutics, from the Sufi School of Najaf to the Niʿmatullāhī synthesis, from Mughal poetics to the Tafkīk school's systematic rejection. Inter-sectarian, interdisciplinary, and transregional, it recovers suppressed Shīʿī voices and refuses the comfortable silos of prior scholarship.
